SOLVED IT

Telemetry Overload

An important player in the burgeoning private spaceflight industry recently worked with Ideal Aerosmith’s Marius Gheorghe and his team to overcome an important challenge – how to transmit and interpret massive quantities of test data at a rate that pushed the limits of modern technology.

How we solved it.

the challenge

The more that humans venture into space, either with manned or unmanned missions, the more important telemetry becomes to our long-term success. We need spacecraft to send information back to earth so that we can capitalize on our success and learn from our mistakes.

To that end, an important player in the burgeoning private spaceflight industry recently worked with Ideal Aerosmith’s Marius Gheorghe and his team to overcome an important challenge – how to transmit and interpret massive quantities of test data at a rate that pushed the limits of modern technology.

The client’s own internal engineers had some ideas about how to accomplish this goal, but were struggling with issues involving the timeline and the budget. In short, innovation was required not only in regards to the data transfer technology, but also in regards to the project’s own practical limitations.

the solution

By getting Ideal Aerosmith involved early in the project’s development, Gheorghe and his engineers were able to co-design their test system concurrently with the design of the customer’s rocket-borne equipment itself. During the test system’s development, the team at Ideal Aerosmith actually helped the client to troubleshoot their own product, offering many fresh ideas that ultimately helped the project to move forward.

“All of the data didn’t need to be processed in the same manner,” says Gheorghe. “Once we determined how to optimize the operations for each of the different types of information, we were able to significantly improve overall performance.”

the outcome

Ideal Aerosmith’s customer found themselves in the unique position of explaining to their other technology partners why they had to update the project’s timeline in a positive direction. “None of them had ever heard of moving the timeline to the left,” says Gheorghe with a smile. “They had only seen it moved to the right.”

In fact, the team at Ideal Aerosmith did such an outstanding job of achieving their contractual objectives that the testing equipment’s final user recommended Ideal Aerosmith to others in the industry. Those projects are now underway.
