SPIE Defense, Security & Sensing 2011Mr. Jay Marchetti & Mr. Bob Mitchell of Ideal Aerosmith will be presenting their paper, “GPS Synchronization of a Motion Simulator for Hardware-in-the-Loop Applications”, on April 28th at the upcoming SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing 2011 Conference. This event is the largest unclassified event for the defense, security, industry, and the environment. Mr. Mitchell also sits on the SPIE HWIL Program Committee. Ideal Aerosmith will be exhibiting at the SPIE Conference at the Orlando World Center Marriott Convention Center in Orlando, FL, which runs from April 25 to April 29.
"A typical hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) laboratory integrates a wide array of digital equipment, each running from its own internal time-based oscillator. While the various laboratory systems have high-precision oscillators, if no synchronization scheme is employed, then time-based drift between the HWIL components is inevitable. When real-time communication between the motion simulator and the simulation (host) computer is required, this time-based drift can seriously degrade the simulation fidelity. This drift is exacerbated by timing jitter in the communication channel and each component's internal processing loop. A motion simulation controller synchronized to an external standards-based timing reference, such as GPS, can eliminate this time-based drift. This paper discusses the advantages of synchronization for improving simulation fidelity.
"High fidelity HWIL simulation requires the host computer and the motion simulator controller utilize a low-latency communication channel for near real-time data transactions of motion demands and readout data. Generally this communication requirement is handled by a reflective memory interface (RMI) between the simulator controller and host computer nodes, where the data is replicated over a fiber optics cable to memory contained within each node. During the simulation, data is written and read in cycles by the host at a specific rate. If the frequency reference within the simulation controller and the host are synchronized to a common timing reference, then the host data “writes” and “reads” will always occur at the same phase within the simulation control cycle. This ensures that the data utilized by the simulation controller is precisely synchronized with the host computer. "

Chad is married with a 6-year old girl and a 2-year old boy. In addition to flying, he enjoys golf, watching sports and spending time with friends and family.

Ideal Aerosmith is pleased to announce the completion of successful customer acceptance testing and delivery of a Model 2003HP Three-Axis Automatic Positioning and Rate Table System to the Alberta Centre for Advanced MNT Products (ACAMP). ACAMP is a not-for-profit organization funded by the Alberta provincial and Canadian federal governments to stimulate development of Micro- and Nano- Technologies (MNT) in Western Canada.
ACAMP representatives, Dr. Kevin Yallup, CTO, and Mr. Thomas Clement, Development Engineer, recently visited Ideal Aerosmith’s Pittsburgh facility to participate in the Model 2003HP factory acceptance testing prior to system shipment. Dr. Yallup commented, “Ideal Aerosmith was very responsive and cooperative throughout the entire procurement process, which contributed to a successful project for ACAMP”.
The Model 2003HP is a high dynamic, precision motion system configured with an integral Thermal Chamber to provide Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) test capability over a wide temperature range. This system is available for lease at the ACAMP facility by Canadian and international clients with applications that require characterization and testing of various inertial navigation system designs.
